Lou Gehrig "Rawhide" Stills (5)

Lou Gehrig "Rawhide" Stills (5)

Talk about a stretch. These 5 rare still photos show the immortal Lou Gehrig in his first (and last) acting role, in the 1938 Western "Rawhide", in which the Bronx native rode a horse (though not an iron one) while playing a rancher threatened by bandits. The 8 x 10" stills show Gehrig wearing a white 10 gallon hat and firing a six shooter. He is seen with co-stars Smith Ballew, Evalyn Knapp and others singing, shooting and attending a cookout. Photos have excellent contrast and are EX-MT. There is irony here, since Gary Cooper played Gehrig in a movie. But Lou never did catch on as a "plainsman".
