Marquis of Queensberry Letter

Marquis of Queensberry Letter

John S. Douglas, the 8th Marquess of Queensberry (1844-1900), helped establish the Marquess of Queensberry rules for boxing on which the modern set of boxing rules are now based. Many of his rules revolutionized the sport, including requiring boxers to wear gloves, and that no grappling or wrestling was allowed. This handwritten 4.5x7" letter is in Douglas' own hand in black fountain ink, and is signed "Queensberry" on the back. It is addressed to a "Mr. Gillespie" and contains a brief bit of cordial content. The letter itself had been folded into quarters, but is otherwise EX-MT.
