Mike Donovan Signed Photograph (12x18")
Offered is the finest antique photograph of this great early fighter offered at public sale. Mike Donovan began his pro-career in 1866 as a welterweight, gradually growing into the middleweight division, and became a fighter of great prominence. With a victory over Walter Watson in December 1884, Donovan assumed his new position as Boxing Instructor for the New York Athletic Club and retired from the prize ring. Extremely rare large format original photo of the middleweight champ, Mike Donovan, depicted in full fight pose. Studio shot is mounted and underlined by his name and title. On the reverse of the mount is Donovan’s inscription and signature in black fountain pen, “Presented to Hon. T. McCarthy by M. Donovan on Feb. 23, 1899.” Inscription is visible through a section of glass on the backing. Photo is toned to a deep tan color, but ink grades a strong “7” out of a possible 10. Photo is o/w EX, framed to 21x28". LOA.
