Mint Condition Roberto Clemente Single Signed Baseball with Provenance
Exceptional Clemente baseball was signed at the famed food & clothing drive one week before his fateful flight to Nicaragua. Ball is signed across the sweet spot “Carinosamente (Affectionately) Roberto Clemente.” Gorgeous signature fills the sweet spot in mint blue ink. On Official Wilson baseball of the Puerto Rico Amateur Baseball League sporting the facsimile signature of League President Elfren Bernier.Clemente was a team manager that played in Nicaragua the summer prior his death The young man who obtained this signature in person and provides the detailed LOA has added the date “12/25/72.” He had it signed on Christmas Day 1972 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. After hearing about it advertised on the radio, this young man brought the baseball along with a case of Chef Boyardee and some used clothing to the Clemente food and clothing drive aiding those affected in the Nicaraguan earthquake. Torrential rains caused a low turnout and the owner saw his hero Roberto Clemente. He approached Roberto and asked him to sign it. He replied “with pleasure.” The quality of the signature stands in part to Clemente’s gratefulness for the young man’s charity. Tragically, Roberto Clemente was killed one week later in the crash of the plane carrying the very food and clothing he obtained that day. Incredibly detailed LOA from the young man.
