Mordecai Brown and Mel Parnell by John Cullen Murphy (1949)

Mordecai Brown and Mel Parnell by John Cullen Murphy (1949)

This is one of the nicest original baseball illustrations you will see and was drawn by the famed illustrator John Cullen Murphy, the artist who did Prince Valiant and had an interesting bent towards baseball and sports. This piece was published in the magazine “Inside Sports” in the July 30, 1949 issue and accompanied an article by writer Bill Fay. The illustration shows Mel Parnell of the Boston Red Sox in pitching pose with a ghostly image of Chicago’s Mordecai Brown in vintage uniform overhead. The original label on the verso gives all this information. It is a marvelous watercolor on artist’s board and is absolutely magnificent. The piece itself is 13x23" and is framed larger.
