Muhammad Ali Signed Mouthpiece from Rumble in the Jungle Bout
On October 30, 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire Muhammad Ali became the second man in boxing history to regain the world heavyweight title scoring a huge upset over then undefeated champion George Foreman. Few experts thought Ali could stand up to the powerful Foreman, but Ali employed a strategy called "rope a dope" in which he laid on the ropes covering his head and allowed Foreman to punch him relentlessly. The strategy worked as Foreman gradually tired and by the eighth round was ready to go. A big right hand sent Foreman spinning to the canvas and he could get up. We offer here a mouthpiece which came from the collection of Angelo Dundee which may have been used in this fight, possibly as a secondary mouthpiece and which was likely also used in Ali's training for this match. A previous mouthpiece from the collection of Ali assistant trainer Wali Muhammad has been sold as the fight worn mouthpiece for this event so we offer this with that knowledge. This rubber mouthpiece has been signed by Muhammad Ali and Angelo Dundee and has the inscription, "Zaire" underneath. Comes in the original Tiffany box it was presented in. Angelo Dundee gave this mouthpiece to sports writer and boxing analyst Mort Sharnik who has provided a letter to the effect. PSA/DNA has provided a letter of authenticity on the signatures.
