Nancy And Herb Score Wires Congratulating Them on Their Wedding (34)

Herb Score, according to Hall of Fame Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller, was destined for greatness. "He could have been one of the greatest, if not the greatest, left-handers who ever lived, added the Indians' legendary Hall of Fame right-hander. "His curveball was just as good as Koufax, and his fastball was better." Yet, Score's march to Cooperstown was derailed on the night of May, 7, 1957, at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium when the New York Yankees' Gil McGougald hit a line drive back to the box that struck Score in the face, severely injuring his right eye. Score was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1955, and went 20-9 in 1956, leading MLB in strikeouts both years, but he spent three weeks in the hospital following his injury and was never the same again. He won only 17 games in the five years following the injury before he retired. He later became a very successful broadcaster. Among the 34 telegrams congratulating Score and his wife, Nancy, on their July 10, 1957, wedding was a poignant one from Gil McGougald, who was known to have felt great sadness over the accidental injury. McDougald wrote on the telegram, "Congratulations to Nancy and you on a day you will never forget. May you receive many special blessings from this marriage. Sincerely, Gil McDougald." Other telegrams include ones from Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg, and Tris Speaker, as well as one from Cleveland Indian slugger Rocky Colavito. The remainder of the wires are from friends of Herb Score. The Indians' great pitcher passed away in 2008. The telegrams are in Good condition, and they provide an unusual remembrance of a marvelous pitcher whose career was far too brief.
