Nineteenty-Century Ornately Engraved Sterling Silver "St. Louis" Baseball Spoon
Highly ornate sterling silver spoon featuring a nineteenth-century baseball figure in raised relief on the handle and a scripted "St. Louis" engraved in the bowl. This is the first such example of this decorative spoon we have ever seen. While we cannot state with certainty, it appears that this piece was most likely crafted in commemoration of the St. Louis Browns, who were members of the American Association from 1892 to 1891 before joining the National League in 1892 (the team changed its name to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1900). The Browns won four consecutive American Association pennants and one World Championship between the years 1885 and 1888, and it is probable that this spoon dates from that time period. Marked "Sterling" on the reverse of the handle. The spoon (5" in length) displays moderate tarnishing and is in Excellent to Mint condition.
