November 17, 1945, Army vs. U-Penn Game Used Football from 61-0 Army Victory - Signed by Heisman Winners Glenn Davis & Doc Blanchard (Incredible Provenance)

Offered is an Army game used football from the Nov. 17, 1945, nationally ranked #1 Army versus #6 ranked Penn University contest at Philadelphia's Franklin Field - won by the Cadets by a 61-0 score. In 1945, Army, coached by Earl "Red" Blaik, was in the midst of a 32-game winning streak, during which the 1944, '45, and '46 teams were all undefeated. In 1945, Army went 9-0, won the consensus National Championship, and defeated #2 ranked Notre Dame 45-0 before crushing Penn. In the '45 season, Army fullback Doc Blanchard scored 114 points, and won the '45 Heisman Trophy and that year's Maxwell Award. In '45, Army's Glenn Davis was a terrific halfback who gained 942 yards rushing for an amazing 11.5 yards per carry. Davis won the '46 Heisman Trophy. The football exhibits great wear. The ball is partially deflated, and it has several very small holes, so it will not hold air. Some of the laces are missing or retied. There are various minor scrape marks, and loose threads where the ball was apparently sewn to repair rips along the lace line. Some of the laces are missing or retied. Written in white paint, with some minor, partial paint loss, is "West Point 1945." Blanchard has signed and inscribed the football on a panel in silver ink as "Doc Blanchard Heisman 1945." Davis has signed and inscribed the ball on another panel as "Glenn Davis Heisman 1946." The football has terrific provenance. The ball comes from the collection of Don Schmitz, but the ball originally was part of the Joe Madden Trophy Room Collection (LOA included). The football was signed much later by Army Heisman winners Blanchard and Davis. Schmitz sent the ball to Blanchard and Davis to sign, and included with the ball will be copies of all the letters to document the Blanchard and Davis signing and inscriptions, including a response letter from Davis saying he will sign the ball. The game ball, with the Blanchard and Davis signatures and inscriptions, makes a fantastic collectible from the days when West Point football was the nation's collegiate powerhouse.
