Original "Amazing Ebbets Catch" Painting by Bill Purdom (22x30")
Bill Purdom, destined to be one of the most remembered sports artist of all time, has done it again in this tantalizing representation done in 1994 of a timeless Brooklyn baseball moment. Colors and detail are astoundingly real, as Carl Furillo’s 7th inning heroic catch in the final game of the 1956 season of Pittsburgh Pirate Dick Groat’s long drive into right field is diligently re-created to perfection. It’s September 30, the final game of 1956 and the Dodgers lead the 2nd place Braves by just one game, a must win situation. As it turns out, the Braves will defeat the Cardinals 4-2, so Carl Furillo’s spectacular catch proved pivotal in clinching the NL pennant. The menacing right field wall, which was 38 feet tall is the main focus of the work of art - 19 feet of concrete topped by 19 feet of screen. Furillo and Duke Snider were experts at protecting Brooklyn clothier Abe Stark, whose sign under the scoreboard promised: “Hit Sign, Win Suit.” Furillo’s dwarfed figure at the bottom of the scoreboard is airborne, securing the white pill in his glove. Colors are vibrant, looks like it was done yesterday. NRMT. Matted and framed to 38x30”.
