Original New York Rens Photos (3)

Original New York Rens Photos (3)

The Rens were the first major black professional basketball team. Founded in 1922 and named for Harlem's Renaissance Casino, their barnstorming tours were huge successes. During the 1932-33 season they won 88 straight games, and in '39 went 112-7 and beat the Harlem Globetrotters and the NBL champ Oshkosh All-Stars to win the World Professional Tournament in Chicago. These very rare original photos include a team shot inscribed "The Ole New York Rens". One was Fats Jenkins, who also played Negro league baseball for 20 years. The other photos show Ren players Pappy Ricks (inscribed "a great shot anywhere") and Eyre Satch. All photos framed under glass, with the latter 2 damaged around the edges of the cabinet cards but not affecting the images. The team shot is framed to show only the image. Mementos of important history.
