Original Route 66 Cast Iron Jeweled Sign

Original Route 66 Cast Iron Jeweled Sign

Established in 1926, Route 66 served as one of the nation's very first interstate roadways, beginning in Chicago and crossing through eight states before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles. This original cast-iron route marker, which weights 10.6 pounds, was made in 1934, and the jewels actually served as glass reflectors to make the sign more visible at night. The black and white paint is all original and the sign is in overall excellent condition with tremendous display characteristics. Route 66 - which inspired a hit song and TV show - was officially removed from the highway system in 1985, though many sections of the old route have been designated as historic landmarks and appear on some state maps. Measures 18 x 19 x .5.
