Origins of Professional Football Team Panorama & Studio Photograph (2)

Two pieces that perfectly represent the roots of professional football in America, these photographs are from the Ohio League, which is the processor to the mega-giant, the National Football League. 1) 1905 Massillon Tigers Ohio League Champions Oversized Team Studio Photograph in original frame. Third of their championships form the organization which was arch nemesis of the legendary Canton Bulldogs. The following year the rivalry erupted into a major betting scandal predating the 1919 Black Sox, which essentially ruined both teams. Measures 22x26.5" in original frame which has been slightly retouched for aesthetics. Silver gelatin image mounted on cardboard mount. Photo has some silvering at edges and water stains on the edge which does not affect the photograph. Photographer “Becker” cartouche at lower right. 2) 1909 Akron Indians Ohio League Champions Panorama. Predecessor to the Akron Pros, who became a charter team of the National Football League and the first to win the National Professional Football Association (pre-NFL) 1920 Championship. Spectacular 11x48" team panorama reads, "Indians - Akron Ohio" with player names hand-painted in white across the bottom and "Photo by Peck." Some rippling to image and original frame. The first socially righteous - and astute enough - franchise, their 1921 club were led by Fritz Pollard, the first African American head coach in NFL history. The team also boasted opera singer, cinema star and civil rights leader Paul Robeson as well. Both images are Type I and are well worthy of their place in Canton.
