Pair of 1921 Jack Dempsey & Georges Carpentier Boxing Posters
Two original, full color posters of Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier for the 1921 Jack Dempsey v. Georges Carpentier silent film documentary. The film was highlighted by the four-round bout which saw Dempsey retain his Heavyweight Championship of the World with a knockout. In identical frames, the pair each measure 30.75x44.75". The bout was billed the "Fight of the Century" and took place in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 2, 1921. Dempsey outweighed his French opponent, who held the Light-Heavyweight title at the time, by a whopping 20 pounds, and he fully capitalized on his size advantage in the fourth round, sending Carpentier to the mat twice, the second time for good. Notably, the fight was the first ever to produce a "million dollar gate." These are beautiful posters with great colors in near perfect condition, save just a few minor tears to the extreme edges. Carpentier can be seen with bowed head reminiscent of a thoroughbred wearing a red, white, and blue belt in homage of his home country, France. The poster reads "G.L. (Tex) Rickard presents The World's Heavyweight Championship Contest between Jack Dempsey, Heavyweight Champion of the World, and Georges Carpentier, Heavyweight Champion of Europe, 5 Reels of Terrific Action." The Dempsey version has the same wording but with the American champ staring straight ahead with an upraised glove. This is an unparalleled pair almost never seen as a set. This exact same pair brought over $18,000 in our auction over ten years ago.
