"Peggy" Margaret Mitchell Signed Book

"Peggy" Margaret Mitchell Signed Book

1936 First edition, 16th printing of the all-time best-selling novel Gone With the Wind bears not one, but two excellent examples of the rarest form of Mitchell's signature, and is attached to the most impeccable provenance. The first inscription on the front fly, dated Oct. 28, 1936 reads "To James B. Polhill, Jr. with all good wishes from Peggy Margaret Mitchell - Atlanta, GA." It is known that the author reserved the use of her nickname, "Peggy" for close friends and family. The second signature, on the Mitchell's card, dated October 1, 1936, is laid in (with its original mailing envelope pasted on the last endpaper) and is addressed to book's original owner, James B. Pohill of Pohill Lane in Louisville, Georgia. He was a friend of Margaret Mitchell, whose correspondence gives regards to his wife, Virginia. Attached letter written and signed by Pohill's daughter explains that her family donated this book to the Jefferson Co., Georgia Public Library in 1975. When the family discovered that the book was put in general circulation and not held in reserve, the family recovered the book from the Library and later sold it to a dealer in Athens, Georgia in February of 2000. An accompanying letter from the Jefferson County Georgia public library supports this. The book has been rebound in library binding. NRMT with some water staining to the last 17 pages. A choice piece for serious collectors.
