Pete Gray Game Worn Cap

Pete Gray Game Worn Cap

On May 20, 1945, a crowd of 36,000 packed Yankee Stadium to watch a double-header that pitted New York's finest against the defending American League champions, the St. Louis Browns. Game one got underway with the Brown's rookie outfielder, Pete Gray leading off against former twenty-game winner "Spud" Chandler. After taking the first pitch, Gray lined a fastball into right field for the first hit of the game. During his second trip to the plate, Chandler challenged Gray with another fastball on the first pitch. Once again, the Brownie outfielder hit a line drive single into right field. Chandler responded like a mad bull, kicking the mound in frustration. By afternoon's end, Gray had reached base five times with four hits. He scored twice and knocked in two runs while fielding the position flawlessly in nine chances. Any player would have been proud of that performance, but for Pete Gray it was a dream come true. He had finally reached the peak after a lifetime of relentless climbing that began at age 6 when he lost his entire right arm in a truck accident. He was one of the few marketable names that the league had to offer during the years of the second World War and was dubbed the "One-Armed Wonder" by adoring fans across the nation. Gray's gutsy play and unstoppable drive reached far beyond the chalk lines though, as he inspired the disabled servicemen he visited in army hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Offered is Gray's game used St. Louis Browns cap, which displays tremendous use acquired during and after his professional career. Originally obtained directly from Pete himself, the hat includes a detailed letter of authenticity (along with video and newspaper clippings) that tells the story of how the owner came into possession of this sensational piece. The hat's orange trim is missing a 2" segment along the right side and has become slightly separated in two other areas, the leather headband is well worn with minor cracks throughout, but the body itself is completely intact and had maintained excellent shape. The most rare of specimens, from one of the most unique characters in the history of the game, worthy of a place in Cooperstown.
