Photo Inscribed "ON THE DAY" Day Roberto Clemente Got His 3000th Hit
One of the most important Roberto Clemente pieces is this riveting photo of a hatless, ever intense Clemente in his Pirate uniform blessed by his valuable signature as well as an incredibly rare hand-written inscription -- on the very day he bagged his 3,000th career hit -- in which Roberto makes reference to the achievement. The 8 x10 full-color photo-print, was signed by Roberto in blue pen on September 30, 1972 after cracking a 4th-inning double against the Mets' Jon Matlack at Three Rivers Stadium -- the final hit of his glorious career, occurring just 3 months before he perished in a plane crash on a mercy mission for Nicaraqua earthquake victims. Signing the photo for a close friend, he wrote on the lower left quadrant, mostly in Spanish: "For Mickey, on the day I reached hit 3,000. With love and happiness, Roberto Clemente." Written with a flair, the milestone signature is mint. The photo itself is VG with some distant foxing. We can't stress enough how profound this piece of Clemente memorabilia is. Obtained directly from the "Mickey" this photo is inscribed to.
