Pvt. Harvey Durkee Civil War Letters, Family Letters and Transcriptions

Pvt. Harvey Durkee Civil War Letters, Family Letters and Transcriptions

Large collection of letters written between 1848 and 1905 by Union Army Pvt. Harvey Durkee from Ohio and various members of his family. Durkee served with Company A, 42nd Regiment, Morgan's Division, Army of the Mississippi, and wrote approximately 40 Civil War letters from the front lines of the war. Each of these letters is enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve and attached to its transcription; all are filed in a looseleaf notebook. Also included is a huge volume (70+) of letters written by members of Harvey Durkee's family. An excellent complement to Pvt. Durkee's letters, these help to fill in the soldier's background and provide insight into the lives of a rural farm family struggling to adjust to the Civil War and its aftermath. The family letters are also each enclosed in protective plastic sleeves and filed in a looseleaf binder; their transcriptions are included in a typewritten addendum. This riveting collection will be of great interest to American history buffs and Civil War aficionados alike.
