Rare 1912 Boston Red Sox Large-Format Ramly Cigarettes Premium Photograph

Exceedingly rare 1912 Boston Red Sox premium photo issued by Ramly Cigarettes. This is the first example of this tobacco premium we have ever offered and we have never seen another, making it a true "holy grail" piece for both tobacco and baseball collectors. The photo captures twenty-three team members posing in front of the dugout at Fenway Park, plus a young girl standing on the top of the dugout between Tris Speaker and Joe Wood. Each member of the club is identified in print along the base, including Speaker, Wood, Hooper, Carrigan, Yerkes, Collins, and Stahl. A "1912 The Boston Post" copyright appears in the lower left corner of the photo. "Ramly Cigarettes" is lettered along the base in the lower right corner. As we mentioned earlier, this is the only example of this premium we have ever seen and it originates from the collection of a longtime Boston-area collector. While no other examples are known to us, research indicates that Ramly did issue a 1912 Boston team premium. That information is revealed in the pages of the October 5, 1912 issue of the United States Tobacco Journal, which describes Ramly's "Big Photo Picture" giveaway. According to the article, the premium was available in exchange for ten Ramly box tops, which could be redeemed at local retail establishments. The fact that so few examples of this premium have surfaced in the past 110 years makes us believe that the promotion was either extremely short lived or not very popular with customers. The premium (13.5x12.75", visible dimensions) displays light surface wear, including a few tiny abrasions in the border areas, which does not detract in the least from its overall Excellent appearance. Matted and framed to total dimension of 22.5x21.75 inches. Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
