Rare 1912 Who's Who in Baseball First Edition & Other Key Issues (3)

Rare 1912 Who's Who in Baseball First Edition & Other Key Issues (3)

This collection of three important issues of Who's Who in Baseball consists of the rarely seen 1912 first edition, the 1916 edition with Ty Cobb on the cover, and the 1920 edition with Babe Ruth on the cover. Who's Who in Baseball was first published by Baseball Magazine in 1912 and after a three-year hiatus has been published annually since 1916. The guide serves as an annual record for each Major League player and has always been a favorite among die-hard baseball fans. The publishing history of Who's Who in Baseball is unusual in that it made its debut in 1912, but it did not reappear on newsstands again until 1916. Adding to the confusion regarding its publication history is the fact that both the 1912 issue and the 1916 issue are noted as "First Edition" on the title page. Despite that anomaly, the 1912 edition is indeed the first edition of the venerable baseball annual and one of the rarest of all baseball publications. This is just the second example we have ever offered, and we have seen few others at auction in the past twenty years.

The 1912 edition displays heavy wear, including a detached front cover, a missing back cover, and a heavy vertical fold. The name of a former owner is written in pencil on the title page and additional handwritten notations appear on the final pages. In Poor to Fair condition overall. The 1916 edition, which features Ty Cobb on the cover, displays a small stain in the lower right corner that affects both covers and each interior page. Moderate soiling is evident to the covers and the back cover displays a small abrasion. In Good condition overall. The 1920 edition, which pictures Babe Ruth on the cover, displays detached covers that have been reattached along the spine with clear tape. In Fair condition overall.
