Rare 1919 Cincinnati Reds Yearbook from Sterling Jewelers (from Edd Roush Family)

Rare 1919 Cincinnati Reds Yearbook from Sterling Jewelers (from Edd Roush Family)

The 1919 Cincinnati Reds were a powerhouse team that won the National League pennant with a commanding 96-44 record. They also won the '19 World Series over the Chicago White Sox, but in 1920 it became known that eight members of the '19 Chicago club were in various ways involved with gamblers who fixed the Series, and the eight "Black Sox" were banned for life by Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Offered is a fascinating yearbook for the 1919 Cincinnati Reds that was privately published by Cincinnati's Sterling Jewelry Company and provided as a complimentary copy to fans. The 3x5", 64-page booklets were published in time to be given out before and during the '19 World Series. The yearbook contains unique images of the Reds' players, as a photographic head shot is superimposed on a pencil drawn torso and background. Each player's image is on a full-page, and next to the image is a one-page biography of the player. Among many others, the small yearbook contains bios of Hall of Fame outfielder Edd Roush, who hit .321 in '19, and star third baseman Heinie Groh. The yearbook also has an image and bio for Dutch Ruether, who at 19-6, with a 1.82 ERA, was the Reds' top pitcher in '19, and outfielder Earle "Greasy" Neale, who also was a star pro football player and later a top college football coach. There is a page that lists the rosters for the 1919 World Series, and the eight later-banned White Sox players, including Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, Buck Weaver, and Shoeless Joe Jackson, are all listed. This complimentary yearbook is much rarer than the team issued yearbook. The offered yearbook appears to be in Very Good condition, with some slight toning, light creases on the front and back covers, and a few small paper tears at the edges. The yearbook makes a great remembrance for the 1919 Cincinnati Reds and the infamous '19 World Series. Originally from the Edd Roush Family.
