Rare 1953 Jackie Robinson Barnstorming Pennant
Exceedingly rare Jackie Robinson pennant issued for use during his 1953-1954 postseason barnstorming tour. This is the first example of this pennant we have ever offered and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another. Jackie Robinson pennants in general are scarce. We know of only three different Jackie Robinson pennants issued during his playing career, all of which are similar in style in that they feature a separate likeness of Robinson and either the team name "Dodgers" or "Brooklyn Dodgers." The offered pennant incorporates the same circular image of Robinson used on one of the other three, but it replaces the team name with the barnstorming information. Robinson annually headlined a postseason barnstorming tour bearing his name for nearly his entire Major League career. Although we assume Jackie Robinson pennants were distributed for each year's barnstorming tour, the lack of any other examples seem to indicate either that was not the case, or that they were produced in extremely limited numbers. Whatever the reason, this is easily the rarest of all Jackie Robinson pennants in the hobby, and it may be a very long time before another surfaces. The red-felt pennant (26" in length) displays three wavy borders (suggesting a possible trim) and moderate crazing to the painted graphics. Several tack holes are evident along the perimeter.
