Rare 1972 Muhammad Ali vs. Floyd Patterson II One Sheet Style On-Site Boxing Poster
Displayed is very large 24.25x37.5" one sheet on site fight poster advertising the Ali-Patterson II fight at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sept. 20, 1972. The poster measures 24.75x37.5", and it is mounted on linen and framed at 27x40". The first meeting between Ali and Patterson was at Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 22, 1965, for the WBC/Ring/lineal Heavyweight Championship. In this bout, instead of going for an early knockout, Ali taunted, and humiliated Patterson as Ali punished him round after round. Finally, the fight was stopped in the 12th round and Ali won by a TKO. In Ali-Patterson II, Patterson met Ali for the NABF Heavyweight title. Patterson suffered a cut eye, and the fight was stopped after seven rounds. This bout turned out to be Patterson's last fight, although he never announced a retirement. The colorful poster touts the event as "4 Great Fistic Champions in the Years [sic] Biggest Double Header." The poster has photos of Ali, Patterson, and it hung at or near Madison Square Garden. Ali is billed as "Former Heavyweight Champion of the World/Most Colorful Fighter Of All Time." Patterson is advertised as "Only Fighter To Hold Heavyweight Championship Twice." It is a very rare version, as most posters that are seen are half this size. This is the much rarer one-sheet style poster. A young Roberto Duran is on the undercard, and he and his opponent, Carlos Ortiz, are pictured on the poster. Other than slightly visible fold lines, the poster appears NRMT.
