Rare 1989 Alan Kulwicki Nascar Race Worn Suit

Blue racing suit worn by Hall of Fame NASCAR driver Alan Kulwicki during the 1989 season. This is the first Kulwicki race suit we have ever offered, and we cannot remember the last time we have seen another at auction. Its rarity is not surprising given the fact the Kulwicki's NASCAR career lasted only seven years due to his tragic death in a plane crash at the age of thirty-eight in 1993. The suit features the sponsor's name, "Wiscassett Yarn," on the front and reverse, and a "PBI" patch on the right sleeve. Kulwicki's full name is embroidered in white on the right breast. A "Simpson" manufacturing label is located in the collar, below which is a flag tag reading "8/89." A "Simpson" patch appears on the left sleeve. The suit is original as issued and displays light wear. Wiscasset Yarn is located in North Carolina, which is where Kulwicki's team was based during his NASCAR career. One of the most eccentric and talented drivers of his day (he held a degree in mechanical engineering and in his early days often served as his team's driver, team administrator, crew chief, and lead mechanic), Kulwicki was named the 1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year after completing twenty-three of twenty-nine events, with four top-ten finishes and an average finish of 15.4. In 1992 he won the Winston Cup Championship in what at that time was the closest title win in NASCAR Cup Series history. Named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998, Kulwicki has been inducted into several racing Halls of Fame, including the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
