Rare Image of Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner Together (1933)

Rare Image of Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner Together (1933)

When the initial balloting was done for the Hall of Fame, five immortal players were selected, and two of them, Cobb and Wagner, are in this photo. Cobb finished first in the maiden Hall of Fame voting and Wagner tied a former pitcher-turned-outfielder named Babe Ruth for second place. You don't see Cobb and Wagner together too often. Wagner is 12 years older, but their playing careers overlapped for 13 years since Cobb made the majors at 18. But photo opportunities weren't extensive, since, not counting exhibitions, they only met on the field during the World Series in 1909, when Wagner's Pirates defeated Cobb's Tigers. When this photo was taken in 1933, Cobb was retired, and Wagner was the hitting coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The genial Wagner is smiling, as usual. Cobb is flashing a big smile, unusual for him on a baseball field - unless he's sans spikes and in a coat and tie. Measures 7x9"
