Red Faber 1920's Chicago White Sox Game Used Jersey and Sox
Right-handed pitcher and Hall of Famer Red Faber played his entire 20-year major league career, from 1914 to 1933, with the Chicago White Sox. His tenure with the club included the scandal-torn 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. However, Faber was unavailable to pitch for the team during the Black Sox series due to arm trouble he'd developed coming off a stint in the United States Navy in 1918. Years later, catcher Ray Schalk stated that if Faber had been in the rotation during that fateful Series, the scandal would likely not have occurred at all because Faber would have gotten some of the starts that wound up going to tainted pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams. This circa 1920s White Sox jersey is made of heavyweight flannel and is in absolutely remarkable condition. The off-white four-button henley-style jersey has pale gray pinstripes and navy felt trim at the neck and sleeves. A felt Sox logo appears on the front; a large "S" with a smaller "O" and "X" inside the curves of the "S." There is a Thos. E. Wilson manufacturer's tag inside the collar, below which there appears to have been another tag which has been removed. The left sleeve sports a White Sox patch; a pair of crossed white felt socks outlined in contrasting felt with gray embroidered heels and toes. There are four buttonholes at the end of each sleeve for sleeve extenders. The name "Faber" is embroidered in dark thread on the left side of the front tail. Aside from a small hole in the felt of the "S" in the Sox logo on the front, this jersey is in near-perfect condition. Also included is a pair of off-white wool ribbed-knit stirrup socks from the White Sox uniform. These vintage stirrups resemble thick wool socks, and both show some moth damage, as well as evidence of repairs. This fabulous lot provides a window to one of the darkest hours in the history of the game, as well as one player of great integrity. A truly noteworthy acquisition for the discerning collector of baseball lore.
