Roberto Clemente Rookie and Oversized Photos (2)

Roberto Clemente Rookie and Oversized Photos (2)

Roberto Clemente's first Major League season with the Pittsburgh Pirates is captured here in the first of 2 black and white photographs. The 9" x 6 1/2" photograph has rookie right fielder Clemente preparing to field Dodger Junior Gilliam's triple in the fourth inning of the first game of a double header at legendary Ebbets Field on May 30, 1955. Under the image is a typewritten description of the scene, and on the back is penciled "1955" and stamped with a Telephoto United Press Associations photo credit. The second photo in this dynamic combo, measuring a larger 10 1/2" x 14", shows Clemente as ball hits mitt at Forbes Field (circa 1960) in Pittsburgh, certainly an appropriate and indelible image of a 12 time Golden Glove winner. Staff photographer Bill Sauro (of the New York Herald Tribune) strikingly places the singular figure of this Hall of Famer smack center in the loneliness of right field, a depiction made more evocative by an anonymous figure walking in a parking lot in the background, unbeknownst to his part in this memory. Clemente in the outfield amidst nothing but grass, a wall and a bystander in parking lot. Haunting stuff! This glossy photo has a few silent creases, but lots of flavor.
