Roberto Clemente "Wedding" Album
We are extremely honored to be able to offer this bulging, very personal family album compiled by Roberto containing memories that were special and meaningful to him, such as his wedding to his wife Vera and other events, places and people he treasured on his native isle of Puerto Rico. Kept throughout the '60s, the album holds a trove of approx. 400 photos taken during leisurely off-season moments, mostly color Polaroids and some instamatic b&w's. Only a few involve baseball, those in the 1st 2 sleeves showing Roberto in his Pirates uniform playing with members of the Ponce team. The bulk of pictures captures idyllic island locales, marinas, romps on the beach, his cars, and views of and from his home, though his pride and joy is clearly the section of approx. 50 shots from the wedding, including the happy couple marching down the aisle to take the vows and a plethora of relatives celebrating afterward. In subsequent shots we see touching shots of a beaming Roberto holding his infant son and some taken by Roberto of the boy's birthday party. A somewhat sobering note is struck by the photos in the last few sleeves, taken from inside a plane looking down at the Caribbean -- the very waters that would claim him when another plane he was riding in went down on New Year's Eve 1972. All photos NRMT as it the album itself, which is green with gold trimming on the cover and spine. A one-of-a-kind glimpse into the personal side of an intensely private, and very noble, man.
