Rocky Marciano Fight Worn Amateur Trunks
Rocky Marciano is best known as being the only man to retire from the ring as undefeated heavyweight champion. In a career which spanned a little more than eight years (1947-1955) he compiled a perfect mark of 49-0 and defeated notables including Joe Louis, Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles. Marciano had a brief and less than stellar amateur career starting slowly and trying to choose between boxing and baseball. The Chicago Cubs made the choice easier when after looking at him in 1947 they decided he did not have the stuff to make it as a major league catcher. Marciano had already won a professional fight by this time, but decided more experience was necessary in the amateurs. In January, 1948, Marciano entered the Golden Gloves Tournament in Lowell, Massachusetts. He scored a 1st round KO over Joe Sidlaskis, then met Charles Mortimer, a good fighter who had a record of 12-0. Mortimer had two first round KO’s of his own before facing Rocky, who knocked him out in the 3rd round to win the MA-RI Golden Gloves Championship. Presented here are the trunks that Rocky Marciano wore in his amateur fights in Lowell, Massachusetts. The trunks are well worn blue satin with gold trim. The manufacturer’s tag for Everlast is well faded, but still intact on the waistband. The trunks are offered with an LOA from the brother of Rocky Marciano. LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc. who researched the trunks for this sale.
