Roy Campanella Handwritten & Signed Expense Report (JSA)
Handwritten expense report, signed by Roy Campanella. This unique piece represents Campanella's expenses incurred during a trip south, either for spring training, or a postseason barnstorming tour. As we can see here, Campanella took a train to New Orleans, but hired some men to drive his car down there, so it would be waiting for him when he arrived. The expenses listed here are as follows: "Gas & Oil 41.50/Car Washed 5.00/Train 22.00/For fellows to drive my car to N. Orleans 30.00." The amount totaled $98.50 and Campanella has signed the sheet below the total. Both the text and Campanella's signature have been scripted in black fountain pen and grade 7/10 overall. Campanella appears to have been traveling with Larry Doby, because a blue-ink note on the reverse, written in Doby's hand, reads "Mrs. Larry Doby/286 East 27th St./Patterson, New Jersey/Van Houten/H-7392J." This sheet was most likely submitted to the local promoter of the barnstorming tour or team secretary, so Campanella could be properly reimbursed. The unlined sheet (5.5x8.5") displays three horizontal folds, a few small stains, and light creasing. Full LOA from JSA.
