Royal Command Performance Artist Pass Signed by all Four Beatles
Beatlemania reached its height in Britain, November of 1963. At the request of the Royal Family, The Beatles headlined the annual command performance at the Prince of Wales Theater. A glittering affair, the Beatles charmed The Royalty, even the Queen Mother. One of the most famous quotes of our generation was said to the lords and ladies at the command performance: "People in the cheaper seats clap your hands, the rest of you just rattle your jewelry.” This lot is an “Artistes and Staff” pass, issued to a Philip Rose as a courtesy to “Pinky & Perky” who also performed that night. They were puppet pigs, well -known in Britain at the time, for hosting a British children's TV variety show. Pass is a typed card, stamped “Prince of Wales Theatre” and headed “Royal Variety Performance,” dated “4th November 1963” in black type. Crudely constructed, it is shocking how concert passes have evolved over the years, into smoothly printed, high tech documents issued by the music industry. Amazingly, all four Beatles after the performance, signed the pass, on the reverse. Paul McCartney wrote the heading “Beatles” before he signed his name. He was probably unsure whether the recipient would remember who they were! Pass is of card stock, and measures 3.5x4.5”. Signatures are legible, and bold, executed in black ballpoint although they are little close together. Overall condition of the card itself is VG-EX.
