Scarce 1930 Frankford Yellow Jackets NFL Football Program
In 1930, the NFL had teams like the Chicago Bears, and the New York Giants. But they also had teams like the Staten Island Stapletons, the Providence Steam Roller, the Portsmouth Spartans, and the Green Bay Packers. In the Philadelphia area, the NFL had the Frankford Yellow Jackets. Frankford is a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia about six miles from Center City. Offered is a very rare program from Frankford's home game on October 18, 1930, versus the Brooklyn Dodgers at Frankford Stadium. The program measures 7.5x10.75". In its 32 pages (including front and back covers), the program has a team photo of the Yellow Jackets, the team's schedule, and statistics. Each team's starting line-up is listed, but not both offense and defense, as teams had players playing both ways then. Frankford finished the year at 4-13-1. Tailback Ed Halicki led the team in scoring for the season with 29 points. The league's schedule was not balanced, and teams played various numbers of games, with the Yellow Jackets' 18-game schedule being on the high side. The program cover lists the team as the Frankford Athletic Association, revealing the amateur origins of the club. The Frankford Yellow Jackets lasted from 1924-1931. It was the Great Depression and times were tough. After a year of no NFL football in Philadelphia, a new team, the Philadelphia Eagles, started play in 1933 - the same franchise that still plays in the City of Brotherly Love. The ten-cent program almost has the feel of a small-town team's program. The scarce, quaint program is high grade for this vintage: EX-MT. Just in itself, it provides a poignant trip into the past.
