Spectacular 1880s Baseball Trophy by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Company
One of the nicest baseball trophies you will ever see, by one of the most esteemed silversmiths in America, Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. (1866-1898). Although the engraving on the trophy dates to 1919, the trophy itself is much earlier (obviously an old stock item sold years later). This is based on the look of the baseball and equipment plus the silverwork. Also, the company became International Silver in 1898 and sports a pre-1895 mark on bottom, “Manufactured and Engraved by Simpson H.M. & Co. U.S.A. 03-80.” Appears to be circa 1885. Gleaming sculpture in silverplate stands 11.5” tall. Base is supported by a trio of baseball bats carrying a giant baseball with beautifully engraved 19th century period laces. Cherub at tippy-top blows his trumpet holding his halo. Richly adorned laurel wreaths jut up from the base while figural ribbons flow. Detail is amazing. Some minor wear to the silver, but it is 98% there. There is a tiny dent hidden on the verso of the baseball. Most importantly, all of the metal work is undamaged. It is so fragile it could have easily chipped off in parts through the years. However, this piece stayed on a shelf and was loved and cared for, for nearly one hundred years. Front is engraved “1919 Interscholastic Champions St. Louis Mo.” Below it is blessed with the richly engraved names of the 12 members of this championship team. Positions have been added including their “Captain” and “Coach.” Bottom is stamped, EX+.
