"Spend A Buck" 1985 Garden State Stakes Owner's Trophy
This very appealing trophy in the form on a hand-painted ceramic horse resembling 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend A Buck is a breathtaking work of art, and befitting a champion such as himself. It's an especially important prize from the 1985 racing season as the win at the now-defunct Garden State Park Racetrack in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, brought in a two million dollar bonus for Spend A Buck. Encased in lucite, the thoroughbred sits on an oval wooden (oak) base and then on a rectangular wooden (oak) base, on which resides a plaque that reads: "Garden State Park" (with logo) and "The Garden State Stakes, $300,000 Added, April 20th, 1985, Won By: Hunter Farm's, Spend A Buck." It is in EX-MT condition and comes directly from the collection of the late Dennis Diaz, who owned the champion horse. The trophy measures 22.5 inches high, 23 inches wide and 10 inches deep. Spend A Buck captured the Derby crown by 5-3/4 lengths over Stephan's Odyssey under jockey Angel Cordero Jr. His 2:00 1/5 time remains the fourth-fastest all-time at the Kentucky Derby.
