Stevengraphs Boxing Silks
Silk woven Stevengraphs were first introduced to the public at the York Exhibition in 1879 and were produced over the next three decades. These silk scenes made with cardboard mounts depicted 188 different genres. The set of 4 offered here, is an unbelievable group of highly desirable prizefighters of the late 19th century in unparalleled condition. Each one sports its all-important cardboard mount with fabulous biographical information on the backs. The mounts also serve to frame the hand woven silk portrait in a gold border. The intricate detail and masterful use of different color tones make for some of the most beautiful hand crafted gems to come out of the late 19th century. The silk portraits are underlined by the fighter’s name printed on the cardboard. Includes John L. Sullivan, Jake Kilrain, Jem Smith & Charley Mitchell. Small print on each reads, “woven in pure silk by T. Stevens, Coventry.” Overall EX+. Fronts appear EX-MT, backs are slightly toned and wrinkled, but all print is bold and legible. Each measures 5.5x7”.
