Stunning 1909 Jack Johnson "Champion of The World" Print
Decorative art print commemorating boxer Jack Johnson's ascendancy to the heavyweight championship of the world. The black-and-white print pictures a large image of Johnson in a boxing stance together with smaller vignettes of his birthplace and Johnson behind the wheel of car. The text at the top of the print reads "Champion of the World," while Johnson's name appears along the base. A 1909 copyright by publishers Brandt & Scheible appears in the lower left corner. Johnson won the World Heavyweight title in December, 1908, which marked the first time an African American had ever held the title. This print was produced shortly after to commemorate the event and capitalize on his world wide fame. The print (15.5x19.5"; visible dimensions) displays light staining along the base and is otherwise in apparent Excellent condition. Framed to total dimensions of 17x21".
