Stunning John L. Sullivan v. Charles Mitchell Boxing Bronze
One of the finest figural boxing pieces you will ever see. Regal bronze statue is by the noted French sculptor Emile Herbert of Paris (1828-1893). The statue depicts John L Sullivan in the act of dropping foe Charlie Mitchell in the famed bout which ended in a draw in 39 rounds of bare knuckled fisticuffs. The event was held on the estate of Baron Rothschild of Chantilly, France hence it influenced the creation of this impressive artwork. Rothschild was a great patron of the arts and commissioned Herbert to produce these bronzes of the event to be presented only to exclusive friends of the Rothschild family. The number of statues cast is unknown, but it is unlikely there were many as this is the first specimen we have seen. Wonderful gold wash is somewhat worn but the bronze retains much of its patina giving it a luster worthy of a heavyweight. Artist signed on the base. Measures 14.25x16x 5.25''. EX.
