Sugar Ray Robinson Cornerman's Jacket
Wearing one of these things meant you were in Sugar Ray's corner, literally, and thus privileged to see close-up the skills of the man regarded as the best fighter, pound for pound, who ever laced up a glove. The tan cardigan sweater with the words that resonated through the sport for decades -- "Sugar Ray" -- is an immortal echo of Robinson's splendor in the ring and was no doubt the envy of every other cornerman in the fight game. Button-front sweater (one button of the original 4 is missing) has scant damage beyond a mild degree of natural soiling. "Sugar Ray" is stitched across the back in tan and blue felt. Collar has a tag reading "Eagle Athletic Apparel, New York." Sweater is VG-EX and a great trapping of the era of Sugar Ray, who made the sport his personal stage from 1940 to 1970 and virtually scripted the ring styles of Muhammad Ali and his namesake Sugar Ray Leonard, who like all other boxers revered him. When Sugar Ray retired from the ring, he was given a trophy in the ring at Madison Square Garden that read, "The Greatest Fighter Who Ever Lived." Is there any sane person who would disagree?
