Sugar Ray Robinson Gold Gloves Fight Worn Trunks
When Sugar Ray Robinson retired from professional boxing in 1965 he was honored at New York's Madison Square Garden and given a trophy that summed up his contribution to the sport with the simple inscription, "Sugar Ray Robinson The Greatest Fighter Who Ever Lived." Robinson's professional career spanned twenty-five years. He finished with a record of 175-19-6 with one no decision and one no contest. 109 of his victories were by KO. His first title was as World Welterweight Champion. He won the World Middleweight Title 5 times. His victims included Hall of Famers, Carmen Basilio, Bobo Olson, Gene Fullmer, Jake LaMotta and Kid Gavilion. Overshadowed by his professional accomplishments is the incredible career Robinson had as an amateur fighter. He won the Golden Gloves in 1939 as a featherweight and in 1940 as a lightweight. He competed in 85 amateur bouts winning 69 by KO and 40 of those in the very first round. Lelands is proud to offer a pair of trunks used by Sugar Ray Robinson during his amateur career in the Gold Gloves. These incredible trunks are blue satin with orange trim. On the lower left leg is the orange embroidered "NY" insignia of the NY Gold Gloves. Label on the waistband for manufacturer, "Davega" is faded, but readable. There are some small holes in the "NY" on the leg and the trunks do exhibit wear, but are perfectly intact. These trunks came from the family of Sugar Ray Robinson. These were kept by his wife Edna Mae Robinson and passed on to their son, Ray Robinson II. Ray Robinson II has provided a detailed accompanying LOA for the trunks. Trunks are true museum quality. An extremely rare opportunity to purchase documented fight worn trunks from the man always remembered as "Sugar Ray."
