Sugar Ray Robinson Golden Gloves Jacket
Stunning knit jacket worn by Sugar Ray Robinson circa 1940 when he won the New York City Golden Gloves. Born Walker Smith, he had borrowed the AAU card of a friend named Ray Robinson and fought under that name. Weighing only 116 pounds, he fought as a featherweight and in the New York City finals defeated his best friend Spider Valentine. The next stop would be the pros and a legendary reign as 3-time champ. The royal blue sweater jacket has "Golden Gloves" stitched across the back and an interlocking "NY" chain stitched on the left chest, both in gold felt. There's also gold elastic at the cuffs. Zipper on the V-neck and zippers extending from cuffs high up on the sleeves to allow boxing gloves. Wear and damage with scattered holes, and part of the NY is separated. But then, it was worn by a guy who wore 8-ounce gloves, not a pinafore. A tough old piece of fight history and a tribute to a champ like no other. LOA from his son, Ray Robinson II.
