Super Rare 1975 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier III "Thrilla In Manilla" Usher's Pass
Presented is an extremely rare "The Thrilla in Manila" usher's pass to the third fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. This fight was held on Oct. 1, 1975, in the Philippines for the WBA, WBC and The Ring Heavyweight Championship of the world. The rarity of an usher's pass to this iconic fight cannot be overstated. It is the first usher's pass to this fight that we have ever seen. The specific location of the fight was at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, but the name of the venue was temporarily changed to the "Philippine Coliseum." This fight was the final bout between Ali and Frazier. Frazier had won the first of the three Ali-Frazier bouts in 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York City when the two undefeated fighters met for the World Heavyweight Championship in what was billed as "The Fight of the Century." Almost three years later, Ali won a rematch, also at Madison Square Garden, for the right to fight World Heavyweight Champion George Foreman for his title. Ali won a decision, but he was later accused by Frazier and his trainer, Eddie Futch, of illegally holding Frazier around the neck so that Ali could catch his wind in the cliches. Ali coined the name of the third fight when he was hyping the bout and said the fight would be a "killer and a thrilla and a chilla...." World Heavyweight Champion Ali came into the fight with a 48-2 record with 34 knockouts, and Frazier entered as the challenger with a 32-2 record with 27 knockouts. The "Thrilla in Manila" fight was one of the hardest fought and most brutal fights in history. After Ali used the large 21' square ring to outmaneuver Frazier, the two fighters mounted punishing assaults on each other. Ali won Rounds 12-14 and Frazier's eyes were almost closed from the beating. Eddie Futch told Frazier that they would throw in the towel. Frazier protested and Futch told him, "No one will forget what you did here today." Much later, Ali admitted that he had also asked his seconds to stop the fight after the 14th Round, but his chief handler, Angelo Dundee, refused. The usher's pass measures 4.25x5.5". The pass has the usher's photo tipped in. The front of the pass reads, "ALI-FRAZIER/A THRILLA IN MANILA/Oct.1, 1975 Philippines." It has the usher's pass number "140" and USHERS in large print. It is signed by two public officials. The back of the pass reads "SECURITY" and DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION/ PHILLIPINES." It is signed by an accrediting official. The usher's pass makes a wonderful keepsake, as ushers' passes to this great fight are much rarer than a ticket.
