The Earliest Known Girl’s Baseball Image - 1850s-60s Ambrotype of Little Girl Holding Baseball

The Earliest Known Girl’s Baseball Image - 1850s-60s Ambrotype of Little Girl Holding Baseball

It is incredibly rare to see a baseball ambrotype; few are known to exist. This is the first one we have ever offered in 25+ years. This is also the first girl’s baseball photo ever discovered. An ambrotype is a photograph that creates a positive image on a sheet of glass using the wet plate collodion process. Ambrotyping came into prominence in this country in the 1850s and was used until the mid-1860s when it was supplanted by the tintype and other processes. In its original leather union case, it is a sixth-plate measuring 3x2.5”. She is wearing a smart checkered dress of the period. In her right hand she holds a black leather baseball as clear as day. You can even make out the stitching. The sizing is perfect in comparison to her hand. Condition of the image is EX-MT. It is as clear as a bell and with marvelous contrast. Union case is about EX. A museum quality piece, to say the least.
