The Finest Harry Greb Signed Photo Ever to Come to Auction
Possibly the most fearless fighter ever to enter the ring, Harry Greb is remembered both for the frequency of the times he fought, taking on all comers, and for the great ferocity he displayed. He was World Middleweight Champion from 1923-1926. He fought a record 303 times in a 13 year career, against the best opposition the talent-rich 1910’s and 1920’s could provide him, frequently squaring off against light-heavyweights and even heavyweights. His career record was 261 wins in 298 fights! Beyond the numbers: Greb was the only man ever to defeat Heavyweight Champion Gene Tunney in the ring. Jack Dempsey said he was “the fastest fighter I ever saw”. Dempsey refused to fight Greb. Ring Magazine named him the greatest middleweight of all-time — just ahead of the great Sugar Ray Robinson. The great Harry Greb died in 1926 during routine nose surgery; he was only 32. Because Greb died almost 85 years ago, anything signed by this boxing legend is almost impossible to find. This photo was found six years ago among other items belonging to the family of Joe Sanders, one of Greb’s entourage, and it has never been offered for public sale. The photo taken by Apeda Studio of New York City measures 21 x 24" framed, is in NM condition, and portrays a brooding and sullen Greb. It has been simply but beautifully signed, “To my pal Joe Sanders; Harry Greb Middleweight Champion of the World”. The signature and inscription both rate a 9+/10. Comes with letter of provenance.
