The George Wm. Fisher Long Island Bottle Collection

The George Wm. Fisher Long Island Bottle Collection

It is our great pleasure to offer a unique and historically significant group of Long Island, New York soda, beer and mineral water bottles to discriminating collectors. This collection of 775 bottles was assembled over a twenty-five year period by George Wm. Fisher, co-author of the standard reference guide on this subject. His 1999 book, A Directory of Long Island Soda, Beer & Mineral Water Bottles and Bottling Companies, 1940-1970, lists 567 companies and more than 2000 different bottles. Fully indexed, cross-referenced to period business directories, advertising and bottle manufacturers, the 450-page reference book has established a new standard in its field. Like all of us, Fisher noted the powerful effect of eBay and other internet resources, where many previously unlisted items have been acquired for the collection. An annual Supplement continues to be published. This premier collection is perhaps the largest and most comprehensive ever gathered. More than 110 communities in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn and Queens are represented, with many of the bottles the only known examples. The collection includes a number of pontiled bottles, including the very desirable cobalt 8-paneled bottle from Deer Park, Long Island, and the dark green Sammis bottle from Hempstead. The only known aqua-colored example of the exceedingly rare Tassie & Co (c. 1848), and one of only two known Phoenix mineral water bottles, both from Brooklyn, are both included. Other highlights include fifteen much sought-after dated Civil War bottles, three of which are unique examples. Four very scare miniature cream soda bottles from the 1870’s are featured, as well as outstanding early examples of both root beer and ginger ale bottles. Many of these bottles are seen only at rare intervals in high-end glass auctions, with several never encountered at any price. Altogether, 452 early hand-made “blob top” and 323 later (post-1892) “crown cap” bottles are included. The collection is fully cross-referenced to The Directory, a new copy of which is included. In addition, a Collection record is included, providing a description of each bottle digitally excerpted from the book, and full provenance details. Altogether, a truly awesome and exceptional collection of Long Island artifacts, a high percentage of which exist as unique or nearly unique examples. A solid financial investment, as collectible bottles have seen a dynamic leap in value over the past five years, due to the extremely limited supply of fine examples and a rapidly increasing interest in local history, and in historic artifacts. Having spent so many years in collecting and research, Fisher prefers that the collection be sold as a unit, despite the certainty of achieving higher prices through individual sales. This museum-quality collection would be an ideal candidate for a future tax-advantageous bequest to an institution located on Long Island or in New York City.
