"The Umpire" Silent Film Poster (1917)

"The Umpire" Silent Film Poster (1917)

Offered herein is the only specimen known of this gorgeous baseball silent film poster. Measuring a stunning 27" x 41", it has the design and quality of one of the Allen & Ginter tobacco advertising posters of previous years. There are vignettes of the umpire in various shapes that look exactly like baseball cards and there is a definite baseball card influence on the graphics here. Marked by the Morgan Lithograph Company of Cleveland, USA, it depicts tons of period baseball equipment shown scattered everywhere and everyone is in uniform. This is unlike almost any other baseball movie poster of the silent era in that this is pure baseball, not just a small vignette or a baseball-themed title. This is for a silent film short but is based on the stage play which heralds, "The Umpire - A Musical Comedy with the Chicago Long Run Record of 350 Performances" stars "Fred Mace as the umpire." Mounted on linen, beautiful appearance, excellent condition, light restoration of some tears and color but no pieces missing. One of the nicest baseball posters you will ever see - and you may never see another quite like it.
