Two 19th Century Boxing Cards with Uncatalogued "Honest"
"Mayo's Cut Plug is Always Good," but better than their tobacco product is their boxer cards, as the one offered here - an 1890, sepia-styled, richly drawn card (N310) illustrating the English fighter Charles Mitchell, measuring roughly 1 ? x 2 ?”. He stands, bare-knuckled and ready to fight in a classic stance. Back of card is clean, with the exception of a faintly erased number in pencil in upper left corner. No creases, centered fairly well, and presents very nicely - VG 3. Our second offering here is an Honest Long Cut card (N157), a beauty from the Sunny South Series. An actual sepia-toned, printed photograph of a young, black “mascot” boxer from the 1880’s, measures roughly 2 ? x 4”. Stark, but elegant, it portrays the unknown fighter in classic boxer stance, centered without any ornate or evocative background. Though clearly undeveloped and small, the boy poses with gusto. We have never seen this card before, nor is it catalogued. On the back, a slight, thumbnail-sized layer of paper has been precisely scraped off and colored over with a thin black marker. Both are fine, and very presentable.
