Ty Cobb & Honus Wagner Signed Baseball

Ty Cobb & Honus Wagner Signed Baseball

The 1909 World Series pitted the game's two best players Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb against one another. In Game Two, Cobb notified the "krauthead" of his intention to steal second on the next pitch. Upon sliding he was met by a message-laden tag from Wagner right in the mouth that resulted in three stitches and Cobb's lasting respect. Since then the two have been forever linked and any item that can be traced back to either individual alone has commanded top prices. Together though, the brash and sometimes belligerent Cobb and the modest and good natured Wagner create a perfect alchemy on any ball that they signed, imbuing it with a near metaphysical quality that exponentially increases the historical value of a ball signed singly by either man. Case in point: this beautiful Official National League (Frick) baseball inscribed by both men. In blue ink the "Flying Dutchman" has penned, "J. Honus Wagner-Started National League 1897-Finished 1917-Coach 1933," while Ty has written in black fountain pen, "Ty Cobb- American League 1905-1926." Rare is it to see such an effort put forth by Wagner as he was known only to sign his name in situations such as these, this lengthy thought elevates the ball's value and rarity to an entirely different level of necessity and a comparable specimen may not surface for quite some time. Conservatively graded as a 7.5/10 his mark still displays vibrant color and strong form. Cobb's has lightened, though it still remains entirely legible, and can be awarded a 5/10. The sphere itself owns nice stampings and a clean surface that is lightly but evenly toned. EX+-EX-MT. LOA.
