Ty Cobb Jarvis Sporting Goods Advertising Display
A resplendent relic from a century ago, this cardboard advertising display is as rare as they come. In 1912, Original Hall of Famer Ty Cobb purchased a significant stock share in Michigan sporting goods company W.B. Jarvis and eventually became an executive and spokesman. The "Georgia Peach" lent his image to advertisements such as this beaut from 1913. It reads: "JARVIS - THE SPORTING GOODS STORE - ATHLETIC GOODS, FISHING TACKLE, BICYCLES, KODAKS, CANOES, CUTLERY, BASE BALL, TENNIS, GOLF, CAMPING AND MOTOR BOAT SUPPLIES, GUNS, ETC. - W.B. JARVIS CO. RECREATION OUTFITTERS 237-239 WOODWARD AVE." In small print at the bottom right corner reads the following: "The Ralston Printing Co. 5-3-13." An oval picture of the record-setting outfielder adorns the right edge of the 20.5x11.5" sign, with his facsimile signature and "Vice-President" below his image. There are several creases, touch-ups and some restoration, with the sign classifying VG condition. It comes with a vintage frame that measures roughly 26.5x17.5".
