Urban Shocker Autograph (PSA)
Urban Shocker was one of the last legal spitball pitchers, and a key starter on the famous 1927 World Champion New York Yankees, famous for their "Murderers' Row" lineup of Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, etc. Offered is a cut Urban Shocker autograph, apparently cut from the skin of a team-signed 1927 New York Yankees Official American League Baseball. Shocker pitched from 1916-28 in the Major Leagues, seven years with the St. Louis Browns and six seasons with the New York Yankees. After the spitball was banned in 1920, Shocker was one of 17 spitball pitchers who were "grandfathered in" and allowed to keep throwing the pitch for the remainder of their careers. At one point, while with the Browns, Shocker won 20 or more games in four consecutive years. Overall, he had a lifetime 187-117 record, with a career 3.17 ERA. Shocker was a crucial part of the famed '27 Yankees, and he had a record of 18-6 in 1927. Shocker pitched his final seasons with heart disease, a fact he mostly concealed. He once confided to writer Bill Corum, "You've seen me sitting up late at night in my Pullman berth. Couldn't lie down. Choked if I did." The cut offering measures approx. 0.4x2". The autograph is signed in blue ink from a fountain pen. The cut signature has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified AUTHENTIC AUTO.
