Vintage High-Top Football Cleats Attributed to Mel Hein (Ex-Duke Hott Collection)
<p>Circa late 1930s/early 1940s game used high-top football cleats attributed to Hall of Fame center Mel Hein. These cleats originate from the legendary Duke Hott Collection, which was perhaps the finest private collection of football memorabilia ever assembled. They are also accompanied by a signed LOA from Lou Lampson. The hand-stitched Spot O Bilt cleats are constructed of high-grade leather (a faded stamping on the underside appears to read "Genuine Kangaroo") and display heavy wear. Despite the wear, the leather remains supple, with no tears. While an exact photo-match was not possible due to the lack of close-up detail to Hein's cleats in the many photos we found, these cleats appear to be the exact style worn by Hein for much of his career. </p><p>Mel Hein was one of the greatest players in NFL history and his reputation as "Old Indestructible" was well founded. Hein played center during an era when players played both offense and defense, and he rarely, if ever, came off the field. Hein starred for fifteen seasons with the New York Giants (1931-1945), leading the club to seven NFL title games and two NFL Championships. An All-NFL center for eight straight seasons (1933-1940) he is still the only offensive lineman in history to win the MVP Award (1938). A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and NFL Hall of Fame (inaugural class of 1963), Hein was later named to the NFL's 50th, 75th, and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams. Game-used items from prewar Hall of Famers, especially those of Hein's stature, are exceedingly rare, making cleats such as these especially desirable. Full LOA from Lou Lampson.</p>
